What is a Surcharge?

The surcharge is an administrative penalty placed on a person's drivers license by the Texas Department of Public Safety as a fee to maintain their license after they have been given a DWI conviction. The surcharges are assessed for 3 years and placed on your drivers license as follows:

1. $1,000.00 per year for a DWI 1st conviction;
2. $1,500.00 per year for subsequent DWI convictions; and,
3. $2,000.00 per year for registering a .16 or more.
