Field Sobriety TestsHow do the Field Sobriety Tests Work? The National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration have formulated a battery of Standardized Field Sobriety Tests. A Standardized Field Sobriety Test is a tool that law enforcement use to assist the police officer in identifying an intoxicated driver. The three Standardized Field Sobriety Tests are: 1. the horizontal gaze nystagmous (HGN) test; 2. the walk and turn test; and, 3. the one-leg stand test. Once the law enforcement officer has administered these tests, the officer will use the person’s performance to make their arrest decision. The battery of Standardized Field Sobriety Tests may lose their validity if they are not administered properly, and this scenario may be a possible defense to your case. |
